As well as enjoying one of our boat tours there are other family friendly activities to do in Blakeney and the surrounding area, see example of some of these below.
What you will need: A crab line (which you can buy locally) a packet of bacon, a large bucket and a net. Find a place anywhere along Blakeney Quay, then you just have to sit back and wait for the crabs to come. Please do not use hooks, you can tie the bacon on and remember that the best time to fish is on the tide (after a seal trip!)
Take precautions for non swimming toddlers, never leave them unattended, armbands or buoyancy aids are advisable too. The tide comes in very fast and gets deep quickly! Release the crabs carefully at the end of your fishing for other people to enjoy catching them. Hand washing facilities are available in the toilets opposite the national trust car park.
Take in some culture with a visit to the magnificent 18th century Palladian-style hall. Discover Holkham’s unique agricultural heritage with the new ‘Field to Fork’ farming exhibition and explore the six acres of walled garden, part of an exciting restoration project. Complete your day and visit the café and gift shop, both showcasing the work and produce of local artisan suppliers.
Spend an hour or two wandering around the harbour, watching the boats, looking across the salt marshes and stopping for an ice cream. It’s an easy activity to combine with crabbing or a boat trip.
There are family-friendly walks around the Freshes with opportunities to see birds and other wildlife. The National Trust’s circular route is around 2 miles and takes approximately 40 minutes to 1½ hours, depending on pace and stops.
A good little spot for families wanting somewhere quieter. There are views across Blakeney Freshes towards the coast and it’s also a good place for a picnic and wildlife spotting.
Wander through the narrow streets and look at the old flint cottages, shops and galleries. You can also visit the historic Blakeney Guildhall, a medieval merchant’s building with an impressive undercroft.
Why not make a day of it and include a 1.5 mile walk to Blakeney from Morston Quay, or vice versa. The beautiful, gentle walk along the coast path has stunning, open views of the sea, marsh and boats as you follow the River Glaven.
